Short Story for Kids written by: Carlos Cebrian González.
He was called Angel, but everybody called him Lolo since small.
He was a sad and selfish kid, an only child and very lonely, because it was so fatty, and was always thinking about eating, at any time, so, his class mates rejected him.
Hi parents, Josh and Sarah, used to give him a coin every day to buy a snack. He did not lack anything, but missed the company of a friend, or to be appreciated by the other boys and girls of the town, solitude saddened him.
Lolo enjoyed eating a cake, fried chips and popcorn after school, unaware of the other´s economic problems, the other boys and girls, who did not have money to buy candies because were poor.
That was his life, getting more fat and noticing his neighbors´ rejection due to his antipathy. Until one day, the teacher explained them that children in Africa were hungry and had no food.
That night, after school. Searched inside his pockets, the coins his mom gave him that morning to buy a cupcake and chocolate, and remembered what his teacher had said about Africa.
Sat on a bench situated at his town main square, in front of the candy shop, and for the first time, forgot he was hungry.
“What´s wrong with me?…Why I´m not buying popcorn? and, what about those giant and delicious lollipops?” – He was about to get into the shop when saw a good fairy who reminded Lolo that there were many poor people, not only in Africa, but also at the village, that didn´t have enough food.
Was when the fairy asked him:
-”Lolo, Do you know how many seed could you buy with the money your parents gave you?”
-”Are you talking about seeds? I don´t want seeds, I´m not a bird. I want to buy candies, because I haven´t eaten in a few hours and I´m hungry”.
-”Trust me Lolo, you will gain weight if you keep eating sweets, and children won´t stop teasing you, and you will feel really bad if they reject you. But if we made a deal, you will loose weight and everybody will appreciate you”.
-”Ok fairy. I accept the deal, what should I do?” – asked Lolo not too excited for having lost the snacks he wanted to devour.
-”well done , Lolo. Now go to buy seeds to plant chards, lettuce, tomatoes and onions”.
- “But I´m not a farmer! I can´t work at the vegetable garden. My dad does that” – Said Lolo scared of the responsibility he was going to have at the vegetable garden.
- “Tell your parents that you want to plant vegetables in a part of your vegetable garden, to give to poor children what you collect, I´m sure they will encourage you to do it. You have to know that cultivating is a very good exercise to loose weight, so you will loose the annoying roll of fat that disturbs you to run, walk, and to play football with your class mates during breaktime”.
